May is National Bike Month

The weather is getting warmer, the days are getting longer, and it’s time to get outside and enjoy spring in upstate New York. For many of us, getting outside means hopping on a bike and exploring the many trails and bike paths in our area. And just in time – May is National Bike Month, established by the League of American Bicyclists and focused on raising awareness about bicycling.

Whether you’re training for a long-distance race, or simply enjoying a spin around the block with your grandkids, there are many benefits to bicycling, including improved fitness, reduced stress, and increased connection with your community. More and more people are discovering the advantages of biking, and in fact, one study estimates there are approximately 67 million bicyclists in the U.S. as of 2016.

LaMarche Safranko Law has always supported bicycling as an alternative mode of transportation and we understand how important exercise is to a healthy lifestyle. Through our PedBikeLaw initiative, we are the area’s leading law firm dedicated to road safety advocacy and legal representation.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, 48,000 bicyclists are injured in roadway crashes annually. We have worked to organize the Road Sharing Alliance to bring together bicyclists, automobile drivers, walkers, runners, law enforcement agencies, children and parents to work on the issues that affect the safety of everyone who shares our roads.

So, take some time this month to learn a bit more about the benefits of bicycling, how to do it safely, and biking advocacy issues.

The New York Bicycling Coalition (NYBC) is hosting or promoting a number of activities throughout the month in the Albany area, including a Bike Safety for Commuters class on May 8, Smart Cycling class May 10, and Bike to Work Day on May 19. Check out all the events on the NYBC website.

Check out the Activity Resource page on our PedBikeLaw website for tools you can use to track weather conditions, calculate your pace, and much more. And while safety is a priority, we realize that accidents do happen. If you or someone you know has been involved in a bicycle accident, please contact us today for a free consultation. Our dedicated attorneys diligently handle motor vehicle personal injury cases involving pedestrians, bicyclists, and runners, as well as a broad range of legal matters.
